Tiggy Ticehurst

Tiggy Ticehurst is a self taught British Artist born in London, England in 1965.

In 2018 Tiggy moved back to Europe with his family and is currently working in Paris France.

After working in real estate in the 80’s and 90’s Tiggy emigrated to America in 2000 where he took up painting professionally, sharing studio space with friend Bill Barrell, a renowned American figurative artist in Jersey City before moving to Manhattan in 2001.

Tiggy's works, painted in acrylic, using a "whimsical fresh playful style" depicting in his eyes, modern day life in and around the city.

Full of color, his iconic NYC street scenes, humorous profession depictions and more recently a fun dig on the contemporary Art movement and the fashion world.

"For me, painting is one of the only internal learning processes for the brain that has little to do with right from wrong and contains no barriers. Painting is a process that opens up inner thoughts and stimulates the senses, cleansing and reorganizing the mind and fine-tuning discrimination. My work is a collection of subjects culled from conscious and sub-conscious memories expressed through shapes, composition and color. Many of which focus on childhood fears, abandonment, family values and intense emotions. My objective is the study of my inner-self, which is achieved through the deep introspection experienced while painting."

Tiggy fell in love and started painting New York some 15 years ago. He arrived there at the turn of the new century and has been capturing the city's energy and vibrancy with maestro since then.

Positioning himself in the streets Tiggy has managed to reflect in his works the essence of New York, namely, the "busyness, the hustle and bustle, the people, the children with their mothers, the taxis, the cars". That and the omnipresent art scene which he has skillfully transposed onto his canvases with his brush and paints. This has earned him the Title of "Urban Primitive" by a famous NY Art Collector.

"It is quite a crazy place" says the London born artist who for many years stationed himself by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Met is where Tiggy found the inspiration for his latest series, which focuses on contemporary artists, the global art scene, and the lack of understanding it generates amongst a great many visitors of the museum.

"Seeing people coming out saying WTF was that? WTF did I just see?" is how the idea to create canvases that "take the piss and nicely attack" the contemporary art establishment came to Tiggy.

Tiggy does not want to be labelled a political artist, he prefers to think of himself as an artist who makes people laugh. "Most people will stop and look and give me the feeling of joy and fun, they'll like it, they will pass smiling, enjoying what they just saw".

And we can only agree with him, we no longer count the amount of people passing by our boutique and bursting out laughing at seeing Tiggy's work.

"나에게 그림 그리기는 옳고 그름과 거의 관계가 없으며, 어떤 한계도 없이 뇌를 사용하며 내적인 학습 과정 중 하나이다. 그림 그리기는 내면의 생각을 열고 감각을 자극하며, 마음을 정화하고 재정비하며, 분별력을 미세하게 조정하는 과정이다. 내 작업은 의식적 및 무의식적 기억에서 찾은 주제를 형상화 사고 구성하며 색을 통해 표현한 것이다. 이 중 많은 부분은 어린 시절의 두려움, 유기, 가족 가치, 강렬한 감정을 중심으로 한다. 내 목표는 그림을 그리는 동안 경험하는 깊은 내면 탐구를 통해 내면을 연구하는 것이다."

작가는 15년 전 뉴욕에 반해 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 그는 새 천년의 전환기에 그곳에 도착해 그때부터 도시의 에너지와 활력을 캔버스에 담아왔다.

거리 한 가운데에서 티기는 뉴욕의 본질, 즉 "분주함, 사람들, 아이들과 그들의 엄마들, 택시, 차들"을 작품에 반영했다. 또한, 그가 붓과 물감을 사용해 능숙하게 캔버스에 옮긴 전지적인 예술 장면도 포함된다. 이러한 작업으로 인해 그는 유명한 뉴욕 예술 컬렉터들에게 "도시 원시인"이라는 타이틀을 얻었다.

"정말 미친 곳이에요." 라고 메트로폴리탄 미술관옆에서 몇 년 동안 머물렀던 런던 태생의 예술가는 말한다.

메트로폴리탄 미술관은 그의 최신 시리즈에 영감을 준 곳으로, 이 시리즈는 현대 예술가, 글로벌 예술계 및 많은 방문객들이 느끼는 현대 미술에 대한 어려움이 주된 주제이다.

"사람들이 나오면서 '그게 뭐였지? 내가 뭘 본 거지?' 라고 말하는 걸 보면서" 현대 미술계를 "비꼬고 우아하게 공격"하는 캔버스를 제작하는 아이디어가 떠올랐다고 작가는 말한다.

그는 정치적 예술가로 불리기를 원치 않으며, 사람들을 웃게 만드는 예술가로 자신을 생각하기를 선호합니다. "대부분의 사람들은 멈춰서 나에게 기쁨과 재미를 느끼게 해줄 것이다. 그들은 그것을 좋아하고, 웃으며 지나가면서 방금 본 것을 즐길 것이다."
