The two-person exhibition [OVER - IMMERSION] by LI SETBYUL and JEONG JIYOON is now on view at Azulejo Gallery.
LI SETBYUL’s work explores themes of disconnection and alienation from the outside world through the concept of a “non-functioning eye.” In her pieces, the eye doesn’t serve its usual purpose of visual perception. Instead, it symbolizes a severed interaction with the external world. Through this striking visual metaphor, the artist examines the structural forces of modern society and the individual’s place within them, offering a reimagining of reality from a fresh perspective.
JEONG JIYOON, on the other hand, delves into the sensory experiences of immersion and focus, presenting them through sculptural forms. While her figures appear deeply absorbed in their own worlds, the artist maintains a deliberate emotional and physical distance from them. This approach encourages viewers to step back and observe the scenes with objectivity rather than becoming fully immersed in them.
Together, the works of these two artists highlight the limitations of perception and gaze while exploring the intricate relationship between personal identity and societal context. LI SETBYUL’s “non-functioning eyes” propose a bold experiment in breaking and reinterpreting our connection to reality, while JEONG JIYOON’s approach balances immersion with detachment to create entirely new sensory experiences. Despite their differing methods, both artists challenge the boundaries of visual perception, prompting audiences to reflect deeply on the psychological and social dimensions of contemporary life.

이샛별의 작업은 ‘기능하지 않는 눈’을 통해 외부 세계와의 단절과 소외감을 시각적으로 표현한다. 작가의 작품 속 눈은 우리가 일반적으로 기대하는 시각적 수용의 역할을 하지 않는다. 기능하지 않는 눈은 외부 세계와의 상호작용이 차단된 상태로, 이러한 시각적 상징을 통해 현대 사회의 구조적 힘과 개인의 위치를 탐구하며, 현실을 새로운 방식으로 재구성하려는 시도를 담아낸다.
반면, 정지윤의 작업은 몰입과 집중이라는 감각적 상태를 조형적으로 풀어낸다. 작가의 작품 속 인물들은 깊이 몰입된 상태로 표현되지만, 작가는 인물들과의 거리를 유지하며 상황과 주제에서 한 걸음 물러서 있다. 이로 인해 관객은 단순히 작품 속 상황에 몰입하기보다, 그 상황을 객관적으로 관찰하게 된다.
두 작가의 작업은 시선과 인식의 한계를 드러내는 동시에, 이를 통해 개인의 정체성과 사회적 맥락 사이의 복잡한 상호작용을 탐구한다. 이샛별의 기능하지 않는 눈은 현실과 차단되고 재구성하는 시각적 실험을 제안하며, 정지윤의 작품은 몰입과 거리 두기를 통해 새로운 감각적 경험을 창출한다. 두 작가는 서로 비슷하지만 다른 표현 방식으로 시각적 수용의 경계를 해체하고, 이를 통해 관객에게 현대인의 심리적, 사회적 경험에 대한 깊은 질문을 던진다.
