ONE'S COMPOSITION
Tac O, Jeehoon Stark
About
The Azulejo Gallery's final exhibition of the year aims to define the totality of perspectives experienced by an individual within space and time as "subjectivity." Through the works of Tac O and Jihoon Stark, the exhibition creates a moment for reflection, reminding us of the often-overlooked individual viewpoints amidst the diverse and blended elements on the canvas. Like variations that breathe life into a familiar rhythm, this exhibition hopes to question the perspectives projected by the invisible unconscious, instinct, or social awareness, offering a chance to break free from these confines.
Tac O's work resonates with the human nature of seeking balance amidst ambiguous boundaries. Symbols and representations that may seem unrelated approach us with a sense of unfamiliarity, feeling like a collection of elements that are often seen as extreme contrasts, such as subject and object, painting and design, text and image. The artist focuses on the intricate relationships between the elements that construct narratives, bestowing new aesthetic value on what is hidden or exists in between. His exploration of relative perspectives through ambiguous media and elements provides a precarious experience of selective interpretation in a world where absolute interpretations do not exist, questioning individual subjectivity amidst phenomena that are easily objectified.
Jihoon Stark's work blends the psychological emotions reliant on a child's pure gaze with the physical interpretations of his time as a strict architect, manifesting in metaphorical yet tangible spaces. By examining the structures imbued with dual perspectives, one can indirectly feel the everyday spaces the artist has experienced through multilayered colors and handwritten explanations. The themes, too, such as civilization and nature, East and West, past and present, micro and macro, are depicted on the canvas as binary opposites mingling together in a vacuum-like state. Stark varies his structural drawings into paintings, reinterprets discarded architectural materials into reliefs, and transforms architectural models into ceramic works, believing that such diverse media traversals allow for vigilance against habitual traces, thereby expressing the purity of painting. Consequently, all elements constituting his canvas create a synesthetic virtual world through organic relationships.
The lives of these two artists, traversed as illustrators and architects, are represented in their paintings. The narratives purely sparked from within, escaping predetermined standards, return to the artists' lives. However, while Tac O intentionally constructs his canvases to discuss aesthetic value, Jihoon Stark explores the aesthetic value created by the elements constituting the canvas. Reflecting on Milan Kundera's words, "Even in the deepest moments of despair, humans unconsciously compose their lives according to the laws of beauty," one might reconsider the direction of life by following the stories ultimately embroidered on the flat surfaces by these two artists.
