In Paek Yunjo's work, which visualizes the senses, perceptions, and images experienced in life with a writer's imagination, both elements of concept and abstraction can be found. The Walk series and Face series are representative conceptual works of the author, and they focus on the movement of the character, or the behavior of the body. First, the Walk series is based on the author's autobiographical experience, and it is a painting that sensibly expresses the person walking forward. Through the Walk series, the artist wants to convey the physical and physical freedom resulting from 'walking' to the viewers. In this exhibition's Walk series, you can see more free conversation-style attempts, such as highlighting the textures in the background or scattering paint. On the other hand, the Face series captures images of people facing unexpected situations and consists of consecutive screens. In particular, the character's action has changed more actively in this series. The way you shake your head strongly or move your head from side to side reminds you of a still cut of a pleasant animation. The comic situation, the kitschy expression, and the loveliness of the object created by the author cause the viewer to feel the raw pleasure. As such, you can see the joy at the base of his projection of the character's movements and situations.

On the other hand, if the previous figure conceptualization paid attention to the object's behavior, the Doodle series focuses on the creator's behavior. This series began with the doodling of an unconsciously scribbling author. The simple image, starting from a short line, goes down and up, and in this process, the artist strikes an exquisite balance, like a weight on a scale. These Doodle series are located on the border between the idea and the abstract. This is because if you look at the materials in the painting individually, it is conceptual, but the screen that is connected and completed is abstract because the shape expression such as the line or surface of the object stands out rather than the clarity of the object. In this way, Paek Yunjo's anti-abstracting reveals the harmony and conflict between the context of the original image and the newly created image. In addition, in the Happy Face and House series, which was first introduced in "TOAND FROM", new icons appeared, such as repetitive images of smiling faces or connecting common objects at home to fill the screen. These new Doodle works are like a small gift from a writer who comforts us living in the post-corona era.

“I want to talk to the world about the special energy I get from something in my daily life. And through that communication, I gain strength and take a step forward again," the artist said calmly, making us guess that she seems to focus on angles rather than speed. The characters in the Walk series don't know where they're headed yet, but they're stepping on their own path, and like the Doodle series, which continues to expand branches, she slowly builds the world of work through everyday conversational practice. In her third solo exhibition, "TO AND FROM", we hope you will see Paek Yunjo's expanded world, covering the beginning and transformation of her work.

삶 속에서 겪은 감각과 인식, 이미지를 작가적 상상력으로 가시화한 백윤조의 작업에서는 구상과 추상의 요소를 모두 발견할 수 있습니다. Walk 시리즈와 Face 시리즈는 작가의 대표적인 구상 작업으로, 인물의 움직임, 즉 신체의 행위에 주목합니다. 먼저, Walk 시리즈는 작가의 자전적 경험을 바탕으로 한 작품이며, 앞을 향해 걸어가는 사람의 모습을 감각적으로 표현한 페인팅입니다. 작가는 Walk 시리즈를 통해 ‘걸음’으로서 비롯된 신체적, 육체적 자유로움을 관람자에게도 전달하고자 합니다. 본 전시에서 선보인 Walk 시리즈에서는 배경의 텍스쳐를 강조하거나 물감을 흩뿌리는 등, 이전보다 더 자유로운 회화 형식의 시도를 확인할 수 있습니다. 한편, Face 시리즈에서는 예측하지 못한 상황에 직면한 인물의 모습을 순간적으로 포착하여 연속된 화면으로 구성하였습니다. 특히, 이번 연작에선 인물의 액션이 더욱 능동적으로 변화한 것이 특징입니다. 스스로 머리를 강렬하게 털거나 고개를 좌우로 움직이는 모습은 유쾌한 애니메이션의 스틸컷을 연상시킵니다. 만화적 상황과 키치한 표현, 그리고 작가가 만들어낸 대상의 사랑스러움은 보는 이에게 원초적인 쾌를 유발합니다. 이렇듯, 인물의 움직임이나 상황을 그려낸 그의 구상 작업의 기저에는 ‘즐거움’을 확인할 수 있습니다.

반면, 앞선 인물 구상화가 대상의 행위에 주목했다면, Doodle 시리즈는 창작자의 행위에 초점을 맞춥니다. 본 연작은 무의식적으로 끄적이는 작가의 낙서 행위에서 시작된 작업입니다. 짧은 선에서 출발한 단순한 이미지는 아래로, 위로 전방을 향해 나아가게 되는데, 작가는 이 과정에서 저울대 위의 추를 달듯, 절묘한 균형미를 맞춰나갑니다. 이러한 Doodle 시리즈는 구상과 추상의 경계에 위치합니다. 그림 속 소재를 개별로 바라보면 구상적이나, 연결되어 완성된 화면은 대상의 명확성보다는 사물의 선이나 면 등 조형적 표현이 돋보이기에 추상으로 다가오기 때문입니다. 이처럼 백윤조만의 반半추상화는 원래 이미지가 가지고 있던 맥락과 새로이 발생한 이미지 사이의 조화와 충돌을 드러냅니다. 또한, 《TO AND FROM》에서 처음 선보인 Happy face와 House 시리즈에서는 웃는 얼굴의 도상이 반복되거나, 집에서 흔히 보는 사물들이 연결되어 빼곡히 화면을 채우는 등 새로운 아이콘들이 등장한 것이 괄목할 만한 지점입니다. 이번 Doodle 신작들은 포스트코로나시대를 살아가고 있는 우리를 위로하는 작가의 작은 선물과도 같습니다.

“일상적인 어떤 것으로부터 얻은 특별한 에너지를 세상과 이야기하고 싶다. 그리고 그 소통을 통해 나는 힘을 받고 다시 한 걸음 앞으로 나아간다.”라며 담담하게 이야기하는 작가의 말에서 작업의 방향성이 속도보다는 각도에 있음을 추측하게 합니다. 아직 어디로 향해가고 있는지는 모르지만 스스로 선택한 길을 향해 발을 내딛는 Walk 시리즈 속 인물들처럼, 그리고 끝없이 가지를 확장해나가는 Doodle 시리즈처럼 그는 매일 매일의 회화적 실천을 일궈가며 작업세계를 천천히 천착해나갑니다. 그의 세 번째 개인전 《TO AND FROM》에서 작업의 시작과 변화 과정을 총망라한 백윤조의 확장된 세계를 확인해 보시길 바랍니다.
