The exhibition [Day dreaming] by Rhee hyunan is now on view at Azulejo Gallery.

Every present moment instantly transitions into the past, and human life is filled with an overwhelming accumulation of past experiences compared to the present or future. These past moments, which cannot be deleted or replayed, sometimes reappear unexpectedly in dreams—refracted and transformed through encounters with today’s events and desires. The paintings of Rhee Hyun-an seem to exist somewhere in between the past and the present, between dreams and reality. A peculiar familiarity in the unfamiliar—this is the result of the artist editing and reconstructing yesterday’s memories as they intersect with today. He said, “Art is a midday dream in which the familiar is experienced in an unfamiliar way.”

Images, derived from visual and experiences, undergo a long process of maturation and fermentation, becoming the raw materials for dreams. These images either hybridize with one another or evolve independently, stripping away color, stopping time and space, and even erasing sound. Within this monochromatic canvas, they emerge as protagonists, supporting characters, or backgrounds.

Storytelling is the most crucial and enjoyable element for the him, which is why the paintings feel both realistic and subtly dramatized. These narratives are not excessively exaggerated departures from daily life, nor do they rely on unconventional materials to stimulate superficial visual sensations. They neither intimidate the viewer with grandiose theories nor leave them bewildered.

Instead, he invites us to see the familiar in a new way, continuously discovering fresh subjects and weaving them into poetic narratives with literary imagination. By refining and distilling these elements, He encourages viewers to engage in their own process of contemplation and imaginative enjoyment. Through painting, which transcends mere form and composition, he seeks to remind us—like a fleeting midday dream—of the extraordinary, beautiful, and mysterious nature of life itself.

아줄레주 갤러리에서 이현안의 개인전 [백일몽 Day dreaming]이 열립니다.

모든 현재는 현재인 순간 즉시 과거로 넘어가며 인간의 현생은 미래나 현재보다 압도적인 양의 과거로 채워져 있다.
삭제도 재생도 되지 않는 이 과거들은 오늘의 사건과 욕망을 만나 굴절되고 변형된 모습으로 불현듯 꿈속에 다시 나타나기도 한다.
이현안의 그림들은 과거와 현재, 꿈과 현실사이 중간 즈음 어딘가에 있는 듯하다. 낯익은 낯섬. 그것은 작가가 어제의 기억들과 오늘의 교접을 나름대로 편집해서 보여주고 있기 때문이다. 작가는 “예술이란 낯익은 것들을 낯설게 경험하는 한낮의 꿈” 이라 말한다.

시각적, 행위적 경험들이 오랜 숙성과 발효의 과정을 거쳐 꿈의 재료가 되는 이미지들은 그들 간에 이종교배 되거나 혹은 단독으로 진화되어 색채를 제거하고, 시간과 공간을 박제하여 소리조차도 소거된 흑백의 모노톤 속에서 작가의 스토리텔링에 주연이나 조연, 배경 등으로 등장하게 된다. 

스토리텔링은 작가에게 가장 중요하고 즐거운 명제이며 그의 그림들이 사실적이면서도 각색된 듯한 느낌을 주는 이유이기도 하다. 그 이야기들은 일상으로부터 지나치게 과장되어 있지 않으며 독특한 재료로 말초적 시각을 유인하지도 않고 거창한 논리로 관객을 겁주거나 어리둥절하게 하지도 않는다.

이렇듯 무심히 보던 낯익은 것들을 다르게 보게 하며 늘 새로운 소재들을 찾아 문학적 상상력으로 서사를 입히고 시적으로 정제해 내어 보는 사람으로 하여금 나름의 상상과 사유의 즐거움에 빠지게 하는 작가는 그림이 단순한 조형을 넘어 우리들의 生이 사실은 얼마나 극적이며 아름답고 신비한 것들로 채워져 있는지 한낮에 잠깐 꾸는 꿈처럼 보고 싶어한다.
