Kim Chansong expresses lush and ambiguous gardens filled with green using thick, textured oil paints. At first glance, these dense gardens may appear familiar, but they depict a landscape where native seeds and plants taken from foreign lands intertwine, creating a place where familiarity and unfamiliarity coexist by chance. The initial concept of trophies growing in the gardens of European aristocrats during the colonial era is reinterpreted through the artist’s unique visual language. In this way, the artist blurs and rearranges the boundaries of the familiar, engaging in a form of painterly storytelling.
