마치 즐거운 꿈을 꾸는 듯한 환한 표정, 그 안의 반짝이는 눈동자, 생동감 있는 색채는 작가가 오랜시간동안 끊임없이 탐구해온 내면의 서정을 ‘빛’이라는 시각적 요소로 구현한다. 구성된 화면 안에서 주제로 등장하는 인형은 단순한 사물이 아닌 작가의 또 다른 자아이자, 유년의 순수함을 간직한 독립적인 존재이다. 1998년, 이사라 작가의 대표 연작 〈Dream〉 시리즈에서부터 작가는 인형이라는 소재를 통해 인간 내면의 기억과 감정을 탐구해온 바 있다. 수동적으로 보이지만 자유를 갈망하는 인형의 모습들은 인간 내면의 이중성을 상징하며 동시대를 살아가는 현대인의 초상처럼 보인다.
작가의 화면은 경쾌하지만 깊다. 매끄럽게 다듬은 나무판 위에 여러 겹의 색을 쌓고, 칼날로 긁어내는 스크래치 기법은 단순한 표현의 과정이 아니라, 존재를 드러내는 시간의 기록이다. 긁어냄과 드러냄이 반복되는 행위 속에서 색은 더욱 투명해지고, 인형의 눈동자는 더욱 반짝인다. 그렇게 만들어진 이사라의 색채는 단순히 시각적인 쾌감에 머물지 않고, 인형의 눈동자를 통해 한 존재의 내면을 들여다보듯 오래된 기억과 감정의 결을 따라 마음 깊은 곳의 감성을 일깨운다. 〈Wonderland : Shine Pop〉의 인형들은 관람객을 향해 환하게 웃고 있다. 그러나 그 미소 속에는 단순한 유희가 아닌, 시간과 존재에 대한 작가의 오랜 사유가 스며 있다.
〈Wonderland : Shine Pop〉은 그동안 작가가 국내외의 활발한 전시를 통해 구축해온 ‘원더랜드’의 세계관 속에서 한층 더 확장된 빛과 색의 향연을 펼쳐 보인다. 이번 전시에서는 사랑, 행복, 호기심이 가득한 동심의 세계인 원더랜드를 이끄는 몬스터가 함께하는 평면 작품 25점 뿐만 아니라 작가의 어린시절의 추억과 상상이 함께 녹아 있는 상징이자, 감상하는 사람들의 행운을 소망하는 입체 작품인 럭키 베어(Lucky Bear)와 럭키 바니(Lucky Bunny)도 만나볼 수 있다. 이사라 작가 작품 특유의 반짝이는 눈동자와 비비드한 색채에서 느껴지는 희망적인 상징은 작품을 보는 사람에게 위로의 메세지 뿐만 아니라 마음 깊은 곳에서 빛이 터져 나오는 듯한 생동감을 선물한다.
The world of Lee Sara always begins with light.
Like a radiant dream, her figures wear bright expressions and sparkling eyes, their vivid colors embodying the inner lyricism the artist has long explored—expressed through the visual language of light. Within her compositions, the dolls that appear as central motifs are not mere objects, but independent beings—extensions of the artist’s own self, preserving the innocence of childhood. Since her representative 〈Dream〉 series in 1998, Lee has delved into human memory and emotion through the motif of the doll. Though seemingly passive, these dolls—longing for freedom—symbolize the duality of human nature and mirror the contemporary human condition.
She's paintings are lighthearted yet profound. On smoothly polished wooden panels, she builds up layers of color, then scratches them away with a blade. This act of scraping and revealing is not simply a technique of expression, but a record of time that uncovers existence itself. Through the repeated gestures of removal and exposure, her colors become more transparent, and the dolls’ eyes shimmer even more brightly. Lee’s color, thus revealed, offers more than visual delight—it awakens deep emotion, as if gazing into the inner world of a being through the doll’s luminous eyes.
In 〈Wonderland : Shine Pop〉, the dolls smile brightly toward the viewers. Yet within those smiles lies something deeper than playfulness: the artist’s enduring meditation on time and existence. The exhibition unfolds as an expanded feast of light and color within the artist’s ever-evolving “Wonderland,” a world she has continuously built through numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Presenting 25 new paintings that portray the monsters leading the childlike world of love, joy, and curiosity, the show also introduces three-dimensional works—Lucky Bear and Lucky Bunny—which embody the artist’s childhood memories and imagination, carrying her wish for good fortune to those who encounter them.
The hopeful symbolism in Lee Sara’s gleaming eyes and vivid hues offers more than comfort—it delivers a pulse of vitality, as if light itself bursts forth from within the heart.
