Tony Bluestone

Tony Bluestone depicted the fragmentation of life and the bizarre world created by the flow of these fragments in the last solo exhibition <The Passenger> in New York. The title is borrowed from Antonioni's film of the same title which depicts the confusion of the main character who chose to become a stranger himself. Tony sympathizes with the scene where the character's undefined identity remains as a beautiful void.

Tony imagines the flight time and exhibition space in Seoul that will be occupied by the painting that left the studio for his first solo exhibition abroad, and expresses the unfamiliar feeling when the work is placed on a par with the human body as a physical being. It is interpreted as a “Jet Lag”. Jet Lag is the feeling when the time of a certain place does not match the time of a person, and usually refers to the body's experience of adjusting to a different time zone after a flight. By connecting this to the substantiality of the work, he draws a painting in an unusual place, and nevertheless implies a series of processes of willingly reaching a place where he loses a sense of direction. In this exhibition, the object of confusion is converged and a more internal story is dealt with. He said beyond the discussion of inevitably passing through people's relationships and put the sense of dissimilarity from his name and body, which he felt while defining his own sexual identity, to the canvas. Through this exhibition, it is hoped that his work, which has never left the United States, can adapt to the Jet Lag in Korea.

Regarding the name, Untitled (Emerging Artists)

It is inscribed on the tombstones beside the lush green graves, and the expressions of the figures 'emerging' from the ground are as unknown as the situation, but the whole mood of the work is strangely bright. The fact that Alice Neel, who is re-evaluated after the women's rights movement, appeared in front represents the ambiguous interpretation of the title, which means 'recently popular'. Tony's affection is implied by vividly painting Alice, who suffered from difficulties in her life because of drawing a woman's body outside of ideological perspectives, as if she had come alive from her self-portrait. On the other hand, a half-alive or half-dead figure appears at the graveside of the reappearance of a person who was ahead of her time and an unknown painter with an epitaph of ‘untitled’. Inscribed on the tombstone is 'Marissa Bluestone', the "dead" name of Tony Bluestone. He buried his life before 2019, when he gave himself a new gender-indistinguishable name. The flower that blooms strangely at the graveside and the body of the person reflected in the light of the grass are harmonized in the bright green light that dominates the entire canvas, and they are connected as one story. Why did he set the original title Emerging Artist as the subtitle in parentheses and 'Untitled' as the title? We don't know if it's mourning for an unengraved tombstone, confusion stemming from his own name, or irritation from history discussing the rise and fall of an artist.

Regarding the body

Through <Sutured>, Tony tells a fairly straightforward story about his body as a genderfluid* and transmasculine** who has not had top surgery. “I began this self-portrait topless, but I knew that I ultimately wanted to cover my chest somehow as a way to signal my conflicted relationship with my gender presentation.” He sits in front of a mirror and organizes his thoughts while discovering the tapes attached to the wall of his studio. The tangled tape also functions as an abstract element in the canvas that can draw attention, he was fascinated by the paradox that it connects him to the background of studio and also can dismantles the form of his body at the same time. The red tape that runs down the wall and the naked body of the person, passes over the chest, and then flow the legs roughly again. It is unclear whether the red lines that overwhelm the canvas are tape, pants, borders that stiffen the person, or flowing blood. Even though the tightly pulled tape was able to cover his chest, even though he sat with my legs wide apart, the expression of the him is just anxious. The light source located in the lower right casts a purple shadow on the left face of the person, heightening the emotion. Temporarily ‘suturing’ the confusion of identity with a tape with clear lines in a single color may be the most candid gesture the artist wants to convey through this self-portrait.

On the other hand, the drawing fixed with blue tape in the background of <Sutured> is a portrait of the deceased father, it is a record of the consciousness that Tony confirmed his existence from his masculine origin. The desire for a man's 'body' that is not given can also be found in <Man-ifesting>. As he thinks that ‘what a luxury to have a body’, explore the human body borrowed within a product design. On the shower curtain, an ideal male body-which he did not get as a female body- is drawn, which contrasts with the genderless figure on the right in a posture with prominent curves. In modern capitalist society, the consumption of products borrowed from the 'body' as a design element is also a means of expressing oneself or the value one pursues. Tony intentionally blurs the character's sexual identity, but attempts an autobiographical metaphor by drawing a male body on a shower curtain in a private bathroom space. As shown in the title by emphasizing the noun of 'man' in the verb of 'manifest', he presents philosophical reasoning by objectively distancing himself from the most directly sensed 'body'.

Regarding the painting

How can the female nude, which has gone through a long history, be recorded in contemporary art history? In <Package>, Tony strips a woman holding a pink toy gun without a muzzle and throws it into a bathtub full of bubbles. And he replaces the white foam that reflects soft pastel-toned light with a bubble wrap, turning all of this into a play. The gaze that meets the person staring straight ahead leads from the chest to the gun, and from the fingers of the left hand to the knee, passing through the glint of the bubble wrap and back again. The repeated rhythm moving to the eyes keeps us on this small canvas. He goes back to the first question and answers it. I hid my answer in the foam in the bathtub, no, it was well packaged with a bubble wrap. There is only one painting here that shines like the silver glitter of the waves. Tony presents the abstract rhythm of color as a possibility of non-verbal communication, focus on 'emotion' that transcends aporia***. In <Inside Out>, where the white paint peels off and the true color of the building is revealed, the red paint bucket of the person coming out of the window leads to a dramatic scene.  And the scenery of <Big Catch> with a blue net and a giant fish waving like waves makes the approach to surrealism due to the yellow sea. Because the Tony draw a story out of darkness and put it up with color and light, we can reach the story only by looking at it in reverse.

Lastly, I would like to share a sentence by Kyunghee Park, the translator of Nella Larsen's novel 『Passing』. “Perhaps the reason her story surprisingly resonates with us is because everyone, regardless of skin color, is at some point float in the many borderlines of a world of privilege and discrimination.” The fear of black people who pretended to be white, the confusion of men born as women body, or, through the stories of those standing on another boundary, what meaningful questions can we think of now? From the moment people recognize their identity, they put themselves in a position of powerlessness and begin to ask the first question of the oldest philosophy. In that 'everyone is floating to some extent', this society implies the possibility of connection. Anthropologist Strathern suggests 'facing and partially connecting with others who are half understandable but still half incomprehensible'. Through Tony 's solo exhibition, I am optimistic that unfamiliar experiences will serve as an opportunity for individuals to reflect and, furthermore, bring inclusion to our diversified society.

* Genderfluid is a type of genderqueer in which gender is fluidly switched, consciously or unconsciously moving between different genders. Sometimes they can clearly see what their current gender is, but there are times when they are unable to define their own gender with a single word because they could stay between genders.

** Transmasculine is a genderqueer term that describes someone who is female but leans more towards men on the gender spectrum, who may identify with aspects of masculinity but may not describe themselves as male.

*** Aporia is one of the philosophical terms and means a state of difficulty in which no solution can be found for any object. Plato said that those who are in aporia are placed in questions, and through the process of answering the questions, they form a relationship with the whole.

토니 블루스톤은 지난 뉴욕 개인전 <The Passenger>에서 파편화 되어가는 삶과 다시 그 파편이 만들어내는 삶의 기이함을 그려냈다. 제목을 차용한 안토니오니 감독의 동명의 영화는 이방인이 되기로 선택한 주인공의 혼란스러움을 다룬 것으로, 작가는 인물의 규정되지 않은 정체성이 아름다운 공허로 남은 장면에 공감한다. 

그는 해외에서 준비하는 첫 개인전을 위해 작업실을 떠난 작품이 점유하게 될 비행시간과 서울의 전시공간을 상상하며, 작품이 물리적 존재로써 인간의 몸과 동등한 선상에 놓이게 될 때의 생경한 감각을 ‘Jet Lag’, 시차로 해석한다. ‘시차’는 어떤 장소의 시간이 사람의 시간과 맞지 않을 때의 느낌으로, 보통 비행 후에 다른 시차에 적응하려는 몸의 경험을 일컫는다. 작가는 이를 작품이 지니는 실재성에 결부시켜 낯선 장소에서의 회화를 그리고, 그럼에도 불구하고 방향 감각을 상실하는 곳에 기꺼이 가 닿는 일련의 과정을 회화로 함축한다. 이번 전시에서는 혼란의 대상을 수렴하여 보다 내면적인 이야기를 다룬다. 관찰에서 비롯된, 필연적으로 사람들의 관계를 지나는 문제에서 나아가 스스로 성적 정체성을 규정하며 느꼈던 이름과 몸의 이질감을 화면으로 옮긴다. 한 번도 미국을 떠난 적 없던 그의 작품이 이번 전시를 통해 한국의 시차에 적응할 수 있기를 기대한다.

이름에 관하여, Untitled (Emerging Artists)

녹음이 무성한 무덤가의 묘비에는 모두 ‘화가’라 새겨졌고 땅으로부터 ‘나타나고 있는(emerging)’ 인물들의 표정은 그 상황만큼이나 알 수 없지만, 작품의 전체적인 분위기는 낯설만큼 밝다. 여성운동 이후 비로소 주목을 받았던 엘리스 닐이 전면에 등장한 것은 ‘최근 떠오르는(emerging)’을 뜻하는 제목의 중의적인 해석을 표상한다. 이데올로기적 시선을 벗어난 여성의 몸을 그린다는 이유로 생전 어려움을 겪던 엘리스의 모습을 마치 자화상으로부터 살아난 듯 생생히 그려 작가의 애정을 암시한다. 한편, 시대를 앞선 이의 재현과 ‘무제’의 묘비명을 가진 무명작가가 공존하는 무덤가에 반쯤 살아나온, 혹은 반쯤 죽은 인물이 등장한다. 묘비에 새겨진 ‘Marissa Bluestone’은 작가 Tony Bluestone의 “죽은” 본명이다. 성별의 구분이 없는 새 이름을 스스로 지었던 2019년 이전의 삶을 스스로 묻었다. 무덤가에 낯설게 피어난 꽃 송이와 잔디 빛이 반사된 인물의 몸은 화면 전체를 지배하는 밝은 초록 속에 어우러져 하나의 이야기로 맺어진다. 원제 Emerging Artist를 괄호 안의 부제로 두고 앞의 Untitled를 제목으로 한 것은, 아무것도 새겨지지 않은 묘비에 대한 애도일까, 스스로의 이름에서 비롯된 혼란일까, 아니면 작가의 흥망을 논하는 역사에 대한 염증일까.

몸에 관하여

작품 <Sutured>을 통해 작가는 젠더플루이드*이자 가슴 수술을 하지 않은 트랜스매스큘린**으로써의 몸에 관한 솔직한 이야기를 한다. “나는 이 상반신을 드러낸 자화상을 그리기 시작하며 깨달았다. 결국에 나는 가슴을 가릴 무언가를 찾고 있었다.” 작가는 거울 앞에 앉아 생각을 정리하며 작업실 벽에 붙어 있던 테이프들을 발견한다. 엉킨 테이프는 시선을 끌 수 있는 화면 속 추상 요소로서도 기능하지만, 작업실 풍경과 작가를 이어주며 동시에 형체를 해체할 수도 있다는 역설에 매료된다. 벽에서 흘러내린 빨간 테이프는 인물의 벗은 몸을 타고 흘러 가슴께를 지나고 다시 거칠게 다리를 타고 내려간다. 화면을 압도하는 빨간 선면들은 테이프인지, 바지인지, 인물을 경직시키는 경계선인지, 흐르는 피인지 알 수 없다. 강하게 당긴 테이프가 가슴을 가릴 수 있었음에도, 두 다리를 널찍이 벌리고 앉았음에도, 인물의 표정은 불안하기만 하다. 오른쪽 아래 위치한 광원은 인물의 왼쪽 얼굴에 보랏빛 그림자를 드리우며 감정을 고조시킨다. 단색의 명확한 선을 가진 테이프로 정체성의 혼란을 일시적으로 봉합(sutured)한 것은, 작가가 이 자화상을 통해 전하고자 했던 가장 솔직한 제스처일 것이다. 

한편, <Sutured>의 배경 속 파란 테이프로 고정된 드로잉은 돌아가신 아버지의 초상으로, 작가가 남성적 기원으로부터 제 존재성을 확인하던 의식의 기록이다. 주어지지 않은 남성의 ‘몸’에 대한 열망은 <Man-ifesting>에서도 찾아볼 수 있다. ‘육체를 갖는 것은 사치스러운 일’이라고 생각하는 작가는, 상품 디자인으로 차용된 인간의 몸을 탐구한다. 샤워 커튼에는 이상적인-여성의 몸으로서는 갖지 못 했던-남성의 몸이 그려져 있고, 이는 곡선이 도드라지는 자세의 성별을 알 수 없는 오른쪽 인물과 대비된다. 현대 자본주의 사회에서 ‘몸’을 디자인 요소로 차용한 상품의 소비는 제 자신, 혹은 추구하는 가치를 표현하는 수단이기도 하다. 작가는 인물의 성적 정체성을 의도적으로 흐리지만 사적인 욕실 공간의 샤워 커튼에 남성의 몸을 그려 넣음으로써 자전적 은유를 시도한다. 제목에서도 ‘드러내 보이다’의 뜻을 가진 ‘manifest’의 동사에서 ‘남성Man’명사를 강조해 드러내 보였듯, 가장 직접적으로 감각되는 ‘몸’을 객관적 대상으로 거리를 둠으로써 철학적 사유를 제안한다.

회화에 관하여

지난한 역사를 거쳐 온 여성의 누드는 동시대 미술사에 어떻게 기록될 수 있을까. 작가는 <Package>에 총구가 없는 분홍색 장난감 총을 쥔 여성을 발가 벗겨 풍성한 거품이 있는 욕조에 던져 놓는다. 이에 그치지 않고 은은한 파스텔 톤의 빛이 반사되는 하얀 거품을 에어캡으로 치환하여 이 모든 것을 하나의 유희로 만들어 버린다. 정면을 응시하는 인물과 마주친 시선은 가슴에서 총으로 그리고 왼손가락에서 무릎으로 이어지고 에어캡의 반짝임을 지나 다시 눈으로 옮겨가는 반복된 리듬이 이 작은 화면에 우리를 머물게 한다. 그는 처음의 질문으로 돌아가 답한다. 나의 답은 욕조 안 거품에 숨겨 두었다고, 아니, 에어캡으로 잘 포장해 두었다고. 여기에는 단지 윤슬처럼 빛나는 회화 한 점이 남아있다. 작가는 색깔이 가진 추상적 리듬감을 비언어적 소통의 가능성으로 제시하며, 아포리아***를 초월하는 ‘감정’에 집중한다. 이는 하얀 페인트가 벗겨지며 건물의 본 색깔이 드러나는 장면의 <Inside Out>에서 창문을 넘어 나오는 인물의 붉은 페인트 통이 극적 연출을 이끌고, 물결처럼 일렁이는 푸른 그물과 거대 물고기가 있는 <Big Catch>의 풍경이 노란 바다로 인해 초현실에 다다르게 되는 것에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 작가가 어둠에서 이야기를 끌어내어 색과 빛으로 올려 빚었기에, 우리는 이를 역으로 톺아 보아야 그 이야기에 닿을 수 있다.

끝으로, 넬라 라슨의 소설 『패싱』의 번역자 박경희의 짧은 글을 옮겨보자. "그녀의 이야기가 놀랍게도 우리에게 깊은 공감을 불러일으키는 이유는 어쩌면 특권과 차별을 초래하는 세상의 수많은 경계 지대에서 피부색을 떠나 모두가 어느 정도는 표류하고 있기 때문인지도 모르겠다." 백인인 척 살아왔던 흑인의 공포, 여성의 몸으로 태어난 남성의 혼란, 혹은 또 다른 경계에 서 있는 이들의 이야기를 통해 지금 우리는 어떤 유의미한 질문을 떠올릴 수 있을까. 인간은 자기 정체성을 인식하는 순간부터 스스로를 무력한 위치에 가져다 놓고, 만고의 역사를 거쳐 온 철학의 첫 질문을 시작한다. 나는 누구인가. 나를 정의할 수 있는 것은 무엇인가. 다행스럽게도 ‘모두가 어느 정도 표류’하고 있다는 점에서 이 사회는 인간적인 연결의 가능성을 내포한다. 인류학자 스트래선은 ‘반쯤은 이해할 수 있지만 여전히 반쯤은 이해할 수 없는 타자들과 마주해 그들과 부분적으로 연결되기를’ 제안한다. 이번 토니의 개인전을 통해 낯선 경험이 개인에게는 성찰의 기회가 되고, 나아가 다원화된 우리 사회에 포용을 가져다 줄 수 있기를 낙관한다.

* 젠더플루이드(Genderfluid)는 성별이 유동적으로 전환되는 젠더퀴어의 종류로, 다양한 젠더 사이를 의식적 혹은 무의식적으로 오간다. 이들은 현재의 젠더가 무엇인지 뚜렷하게 알 수 있을 때도 있지만, 젠더와 젠더 사이에 머무르는 때도 있기 때문에 자신의 성별을 하나의 단어로 정의하지 못할 때도 있다.

** 트랜스매스큘린(Transmasculine)은 여성이지만 젠더 스펙트럼에서 남성에 좀 더 기울어진 사람을 묘사하는 젠더퀴어 용어로, 남성성의 측면으로 정체화 하지만 자신을 남성으로 묘사하지는 않을 수 있다.

*** 아포리아(Aporia)란 철학 용어의 하나로 어떠한 사물에 관하여 전혀 해결의 방도를 찾을 수 없는 난관의 상태를 의미한다. 플라톤은 아포리아 속에 있는 자는 질문 속에 놓이게 되고, 그 질문에 답을 해 나가는 과정을 통하여 전체와의 관계를 맺어가게 된다고 했다.
